Confused about 2.x versions

I was wondering if you could clarify how you are doing the version counts for the 2.X betas. The date on the Beta 11 download says Nov 20th, but I know for sure that I tried out beta 11 back in early October. Have you been making changes to it, but keeping the same Beta #?

The reason I ask is that the show width/height parameters didn't seem to be working correctly when I tried back in October. I was wondering if it had been fixed since then.

Re: Confused about 2.x versions

Well that makes two of us (at least), BUT, I'm also confused about ALL the versions period!!!

I thought that the 1x series was NOT supposed to be able to handle the .WTV extensions, so what's this about it working in Win7?

Also, if it doesn't handle .WTV extensions, why port the 1.x version for Win7 which (as far as I can tell) ONLY records IN .WTV?

Additionally, WHAT has happened to Version 2?  I have not seen anything new with it, is it dead, is it ever going to be finished, is there ever going to be a GUI for it, what's happening?

Look, I understand that you’re doing this for free, and I (personaly) THANK YOU VERY MUCH for ALL that you are doing, and, I understand the pressures of the salt mine, and that we all have to earn our daily bread, but can you understand the frustration levels out here?  When I first came across your wonderful work, there was ONLY v-1.0.9 (x-32 & 64) and the 2.0 BETA 10 & 11, that was it, now you have the 1.0.8 (which was there but not current) the 1.0.9, the 1.1 BETA(s) 1, 2, & 3 as well as the production versions in x32 & x64, and it appears ( at least out here in web land) nothing happening on the 2.0 branch, and there are allot of us who would desperately like to get our grubby little paws on that  cause were running Win7 and were having to deal with .WTV (thanks to our "friends" in Redmond who keep bending over to the media moguls in LA & NY who are afraid of losing any money from the "Cash cows" out there).

Could you PLEASE let us ALL out here know what's going on, and IF it is possible, could you at least set up a GUI for the beta 11 so that its not such a bear to use, OR just release the finished (or updated) 2.0?

Thanks very much for listening to my rant, it's been a long and frustrating few months.

Who cares about a GUI? Please do not waste you time on that, as the important think is fixing the 0-byte file error.  I no longer get the errors in the log files, but with 2.0 BETA 11, the log files say it started converting then just makes a 0byte file in the folder.  Let's get that fixed, then worry about the GUI later...that is just icing as far as I am concerned.  Thanks for the hard work.  Have not seen any posts by you/the programmer in 3 months...is this dead? I hope not, it was SO close to working perfectly.

Good morning "crobs808,"

Well I would like to say that I'm very sorry that you have been having such a frustrating time, "0-byte" files are a pain in the A$$, but to answer your question, I Care, that's who cares!  When I started working with this program late last year, I was having ALL Sorts of issues such as video NOT converting, commercial skip (which STILL DOESN’T WORK btw) but with the help of other members of this forum, and the wonderful gent who has spent his time and efforts to conceive and white this program, I was able to get it up and running with absolutely FAN-FRIGGING-TASTIC results!!!

I don't know, maybe you didn't get it (or I was too subtle) what I was saying, which was (in essence), like you said  “Have not seen any posts by you/the programmer in 3 months...is this dead?” That’s EXACTLY what the heck I was asking, what is going on with this program. As for me, I have seen NO discernable advances on this branch of development since I started working with it back in (oh, I forget, maybe) middle to late last year (2009) about a week after it was first posted on line.

My personal frustration (and I think yours and many others out there) is that there have been advances in the 1x line, but NONE AT ALL in the 2x line, which I personally would be prioritizing, considering that Win 7 (with its new .WTV format) is out and, while I know there is an installed base of other versions of Windows/MCE, they have a "Complete" program to work with - GUI and all – THAT works for their recording formats, and we have seen butkiss, OK, get it now, I too was decrying the lack of work on the 2x branch period, that includes YOUR issues, OK (?)

THAT's WHO CARES, OK?

If you have issues, Maybe I (or some of the other folks)  can help, I'm no programmer or debugger, and my skills are rusty (that's what a year & a half of looking for work will do to you), but I would be more than happy to TRY to help, IF I can, OK?

Re: Confused about 2.x versions
Modified By mcebuddyadmin on 8/4/2010 6:53:37 PM)

The 2.x branch has been on hold due to having to resolve the H.264/WTV problem as more and more people were running into it (plus a string of non MCEBuddy related disasters).  This has taken a LOT of effort to work out and I mean MAN WEEKS of my own time (you just don't see it)!  Why?  Because the free and open source (FOSS) options have not been up to the task.  And there are a dozen FOSS options with another few dozen possible combinations to try to get them to work.  I've now found one that works for most of broadcasting codec combinations and will cover the rest in the next 6-12 months.  So for the first time I have a way forward.

I've built MCERemux to test if this works and I hope people can tell me how it goes.

Right now I am writing that code into the next build of MCEBuddy 2.x, which has a lot to happen to it and I need to re-acquaint myself with the depths of the code as it's a pretty massive application when compared to MCEBuddy 1.x.

So where are things up to:

  1. MCERemux is out to test the remux of WTV - it's critical to MCEBuddy 2.0
  2. MCEBuddy 2.0 Betas are starting up again
  3. The MCEBuddy 1.x branch is completed.  There will be no more 1.x releases.
  4. I'll be travelling until the end of September so I do not see myself getting a new beta build out until October, so October is the planned release time for BETA12.

As for the 3 month gap in posting to these forums.  Well, until July 2010 my working week has never been less than 60 hours a week.  Responding to all the forum posts takes me a few *hours* at a time, due to the one-to-many problem.  Which is why I am so appreciative of the people who respond for me.

I've got a job.  It's very demanding.  It's senior and it sometimes takes a lot of hours.

But things are looking up.

Derek
