MCEBuddy is a video conversion and advertisement removal application primarily for recorded television, serving the DVR community since 2005.
The goal of MCEBuddy is to perform its tasks in the following manner:
- Requiring a minimum of technical knowledge. Video transcoding is pretty involved and most people want a car-like experience, that is they want it to work and but not need to know how it works.
- Do it automatically in the background, automatigically. Most people don’t want to have to run up a UI and manually convert the file, or sit there watching a progress bar. So automatic conversions, silently, in the background and at times when the DVR software is not being used. Oh and work with power management to boot. This whole bit is hard and is why there isn’t much else out there that can work this way.
- Support profiles and leverage what knowledge is out there. So this drove things down the mencoder/ffmpeg/handbrake path. You can use existing profiles and knowledge bases to build your own or tweak. MCEBuddy (2.0) then optimises them specific to each recording.
- Work with WTV files. This has been pretty tough, combined with the automagic feature, now that the number of codecs for WTV (HDTV) has exploded.
