    MPEG to H.264 audio issues

    I am attempting to convert movies in mpg format to H.264, however am experiencing some audio issues.  Firstly, the source mpg plays fine both through my VMC and through WMP on another pc where I'm doing the conversion.  If the H.264 file is played back on the pc that I perform the conversion with a 3.1 sound system, all voices are only playing through the sub-woofer and not the other three speakers, and is therefore virtually audible.  All other sounds sound fine, including background sound effects and music - it's only voices that are not playing correctly.

    If I take the H.264 converted file to my VMC box (with a 5.1 channel audio system) and play through VMC, all voices are coming from the right rear suround speaker and no others.  So, voices are heard, but not through the correct speakers.

    If I convert the same mpg file to DivX, voices are fine, but not in 5.1 channel when played on the VMC.

    I have ffdshow installed on both pc's, which is handling video and audio when playing the avi (ie: both ff icons are displayed in the system tray).  When I play the original mpg file, only the audio ffdshow icon displays in the system tray.

    Hope you can shed some light on this for me.

    Many thanks

    EDIT: I'm using MCEBuddy 1.06

    It could be the forcing of 6 channel (5.1) conversions with the H.264 transcode. This does not appear to be working consistently.  I'm working on this as part of the next encode update.  One thing you could try in the meantime is open the mencoder.conf file and remove all lines containing:

    af=channels=6
    channels=6

    This should allow the channel autodetection.  However this has sometimes made 5.1 recordings stero in the past, but its better than losing the main audio track.  If this works for you please let me know and I'll include this in the encode update.  It has been fine for me.

    Re: MPEG to H.264 audio issues

    Thanks Derek, that solved the problem (sort of).  Voices are now heard on the 3.1 channel system, but no 5.1 sound, unfortunately.

    Is it not possible to obtain 5.1 channel sound on DivX?

    Cheers

    It is possible to have 5.1 sound with DivX.  The best and most supported codec being AC3 (Dolby 5.1).  Unfortunately most examples of this are DVD rips where the sound is copied directly from the source.  We don't want to do this in MCEBuddy as the source is mp2, which means we want to transcode. In either event, all my attempts so far to encode using AC3 or the copying the original audio track have led to massive (and I mean *massive*) audio sync issues when converting with mencoder from dvr-ms.  It could work using AAC audio, but then you have an unusual and rarely supported video/audio codec combination.  So I bit the bullet and rationalised to stereo mp3 as it has the best support, is the most compatible and more robust transcode for dvr-ms -> divx.
