Audio off sych in xVid avi convertion of ATSC HD recording.

I cant thank much enough for making my life easier.

I m using 1.0.5 version with Visa Ultimate MC

I tried all x.264, wmv and xvid avi with normal video quality. The size/quality ratio of Xvid looks very promissing.

But i encountered couple of bugs

one bug is already raised by other user about Xvid AVI file cannot be played by the DivX player.

another one is Audio delay, yes, after the conversion of my ATSC HD recording, audio delay goes from few miliseconds during the first minute of show and as it go on upto aprox 2 min towards the end of the show. (Audio delay is not an issue for the analog recorded show)

Does any body has similar issue??

    I have Core2Duo 6250, 4G RAM, 300G 3GSata HDD

i have the same exact issue, but it is not with ATSC, but with analog ntsc tuner (Angel USB tuner from Dell).  I am running mce2005.

From where did you got 1.0.6?

In reply to all of this, yes 1.0.6 BETA has resolves about 3 different sync issues, so It's fairly likely that the problem is/will be resolved.  If you're not on the beta and are willing to put the time in, post to the beta request forum.

    Cheers

Yep, this is a real identified issue.  As this inter-relates with a bunch of other issues I'm going to open a new thread just for it.

First thanks for adding me to the Beta program (but the beta version 1.0.6 Beta 10 has serious mosiac issue to i immediately switched back to 1.0.5

    • I want to add some of my findings...
      • HD programs broadcasts in 720p format (prison break, House) does not has audio sync issue (both in WMV and xVid)
      • WMV sizes varies from program to program... for instance prison break E1 size is 644MB and E2 size 700+ MB
      • HD programs 1080i  format (Heroes, Bionic Woman) seems to have audio sync issue

    Thanks Bharat,

I've got a completely new DivX encode which is looking good that I will release into the beta soon.  I'll try to find a 1080i recording to try it with first now.  Thanks for that.

    Cheers

I'm seeing this in 1.0.5 with h.264 conversions (720p).  The video is playing slower than the audio, so the gap widens as the recording plays.

This may be a completely different issue than the xvid one, though.  In my case, I think the ffdshow decoder may just be maxing out my system resources.  The thing that bothers me about this is that I played back one of these recordings a few days ago with absolutely no problems.  After having issues with two new recordings, I went back and played the previous "good" one, and had the same issues.

What is responsible for audio sync, the playback decoders or app, or the encoder?

    Thanks,

     --Mike

    H.264 should be OK with 1.0.6 beta11.1

As for the audio sync, usually its the conversion as audio sync issues are fairly common with transcoding and a common cause of pulling one's hair out.  However, the symptoms you describe don't point to an encoding problem (it was OK before, post encode, and isn't now).

So far, the only major issue seems to be with 1080i conversions and audio sync.  Unfortunately I don't have a good solution to that yet, or possibly before release either.

Something I found on another site about using FFmpeg....

For all DVR-MS conversions please use the "-async 1" switch.  If you do not use this switch you can have Audio/Video sync issues.

Don't know if you've tried this or not in your configs.

    Custom PC Specs:
    Intel Core2Duo E6600 @ 2.4ghz
    2gb RAM & 1gb Readyboost
    1.5tb Harddrive (3x500 SATAII 7500rpm)
    nVidia 8600GTS PCIe16
3 Tuners on 2 Cards: Hauppauge PVR-MCE150 and Hauppauge HVR-1600
Analog Cable and OTA Digital HD with Terk Indoor Antenna
Onboard 7.1 Audio to RCA 5.1 Surround Receiver
    Video via DVI->HDMI cable
    Sharp Aquos 37-inch LCD HDTV
    (and it's in my bedroom)

    I found another intresting thing...

all of my 720p program which does not have audio sync issue has frame rate of 42 fps

Also, some of the 1080i successfully converted and frame rate of those avi is 59 fps. but it is completely unpredictable when mcebuddy uses which frame rate on 1080i programs. Sizes of the avi files also varies with the frame rate.

Since i found this interesting thing, i went and checked my videos coverted with 1.0.5 (which was not compatible with DivX enabled DVD player) they were all 29 fps. and I also found one 1080i recording (Tonight's Show with Jay Leno) converted succefully with 1.0.5. i dont know what happend afterwords, why it stopped converting it with audio sync. I deleted that source too so i cant duplicate this behaviour.

thanks for the tip on the async switch but where do I place this "-async 1" switch?

In mencoder.conf under the profile you are using.  There are a lot of options to use and they all vary with in their success rate.  Another is ofps=24000/1001
